Why We Love Our Jeeps, Big Tires and All
Hey trail fam!
Today we’re taking a ride way back — before the trails, before the badges, before the lift kits and rock crawlers — to uncover the history of the iconic Jeep. Where did it come from? Who built it? And how did it become one of the most loved off-road vehicles in the world?
Spoiler: It all started with a war and a need for a rugged, go-anywhere vehicle — and Jeep more than delivered.
🚜 Where It All Began: Jeep’s Wartime Roots
Jeep was born out of necessity in 1940, when the U.S. military issued a call for a “light reconnaissance vehicle” that could handle just about anything. The requirements? It had to be lightweight, four-wheel drive, fast, and tough enough to handle the brutal conditions of war.
Three companies competed for the contract:
Bantam
Willys-Overland
Ford
While Bantam designed the original prototype, Willys ultimately won the contract due to its powerful engine and ability to meet production demands. Ford also stepped in to help with mass production under the name GPW.
Thus, the Willys MB was born — and with it, the Jeep legend began.
Fun Fact: The name “Jeep” is believed to have come from the slurring of the military designation GP (General Purpose), though some say it was also a reference to Eugene the Jeep, a magical creature from Popeye cartoons!
🚙 Jeep Goes Civilian
After World War II, Willys-Overland saw the potential for a civilian version of the Jeep, and in 1945, they released the CJ-2A (CJ standing for "Civilian Jeep").
It quickly became a hit with farmers, outdoorsmen, and adventurers. The rest is history. Over the years, Jeep has evolved through many models — from CJ and Wrangler to Cherokee, Gladiator, and beyond — always keeping that same adventurous spirit.
🎨 Most Popular Jeep Colors: Classic & Bold
Jeep owners are all about personality — and their rigs often reflect it. While color trends shift from year to year, some shades have proven timeless and popular among Jeepers.
Here are a few fan-favorites:
Black – Sleek, timeless, and a blank canvas for mods.
White – Clean and crisp (plus, it hides scratches surprisingly well).
Granite Crystal Metallic – That perfect charcoal-meets-silver.
Firecracker Red – Bright, bold, and easy to spot on the trail.
Hydro Blue – A head-turner and off-road favorite.
Sarge Green – A nod to Jeep’s military roots.
Snazzberry & Tuscadero – Limited editions that made a big splash.
Jeep's limited and seasonal colors (like Bikini Teal, Punk’n Orange, or Earl Gray) make collecting and customizing even more fun.
🛞 Why Do Jeeps Have Such Big Tires?

It’s not just for looks — though let’s be real, big tires do look awesome.
Here’s why big tires matter on a Jeep:
Better Ground Clearance: Larger tires help lift your Jeep higher off the ground, reducing the chance of scraping on rocks, logs, or uneven terrain.
More Traction: Bigger tires = more surface area = better grip, especially on mud, sand, snow, or rocks.
Improved Off-Road Performance: When crawling over obstacles, larger tires provide better control and smoother transitions.
Water Crossings: They help keep your undercarriage out of puddles and creeks.
For most off-roaders, moving up to 33" or 35" tires is a common early upgrade. Some go even bigger depending on how wild they get on the trails.
🔧 Why Upgrade Your Suspension?
Your suspension is what keeps your Jeep stable, flexible, and trail-ready.
Here’s why upgrading it matters:
More Flex (Articulation): A better suspension allows your wheels to move more independently over uneven surfaces, keeping traction where it counts.
Smoother Ride: Upgraded shocks and springs help absorb bumps and jolts, making for a more comfortable ride — especially on rocky or rutted trails.
Room for Bigger Tires: A lift kit raises your Jeep’s height, allowing clearance for those bigger tires we just talked about.
Durability: Trail riding puts strain on your stock suspension. Upgraded components hold up better under extreme use.
Whether you go with a 2-inch budget boost or a full 4+ inch lift, the key is to match your build to your trail goals.
🚗 Jeep: More Than a Vehicle — It's a Lifestyle
